Mt.. Sterling Court Day
Court Day began at the turn of the 19th Century, when the Kentucky General
Assembly decreed that each county should meet once a month to hold court and
conduct business. This day became an annual trading day when people came
from many miles around to buy, sell and trade. Large flocks of turkey geese
and chickens were brought to town. Farmers brought animal hides, wild root
and herbs they had gathered. There were many mules and horses for sale or
trade. Guns were bartered along with the finest hunting dogs, ax handles and
farm equipment.
Today animals are no
longer traded, but you can still find one-of-a-kind antiques, handmade
crafts, collectibles, handmade furniture and the bounties of the autumn's
harvest, all in the tradition of the historical court day.
